What are the Windows Optional Features?

In Windows, optional features are functionalities which is not included in the basic installation by default. These features can be added later depending on your specific needs and preferences. They offer a way to customize your Windows experience and keep the operating system leaner if there are programs you don't anticipate using.


Some examples of optional features in Windows include:

  • Language packs: Add support for different languages for displaying menus and dialog boxes.

  • Legacy Windows tools: Programs like Paint, Notepad, and Wordpad.

  • Media features: Windows Media Player for playing audio and video files.

  • .NET Framework: A requirement for some older applications.

How to Access Windows Optional Features?


Method 1: Using Settings

Open the Settings App and navigate to "System => Optional features".

STEP 1: Press the Windows key + R to open the run window.


STEP 2: Copy and paste the below command:

ms-settings:optionalfeatures

How to Add Windows Optional Feature?

STEP 1: Navigate to "Settings => System => Optional features".


STEP 2: Click on "View feature" to add an optional feature.

Select the box to add a feature. You can select multiple features.

How to Delete Optional Feature in Windows?

STEP 1: Navigate to "Settings => System => Optional Features".


STEP 2: Select the feature that you want to remove.

How to Hide Optional Feature in Windows?

There are two different methods to hide optional features:

  1. Using Local Group Policy Editor

  2. Windows PowerShell


Method 1: Hide the Optional Feature using the Local Group Policy Editor

STEP 1: Press the Windows key + R. Type "gpedit.msc" and click OK.


STEP 2: Navigate to the following path:

User Configuration\Administrative Template\Programs

STEP 3: Double-click on Hide "Windows Features".

STEP 4: A prompt box will appear. Select "Enabled" to hide the optional features from the device.

Note: You cannot disable specific Windows features using this method.


Method 2: Hide Optional Feature using Windows PowerShell


STEP 1: Open the Windows PowerShell.


STEP 2: Copy and paste the below commands:


To enable the Windows feature

Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature

Hide Windows Optional Features using Windows PowerShell

To disable the Windows feature

Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature
